What *NOT* to Say to Someone With Mental Health Issues

This post is similar to my last post, “What Not to Say to Trans People,” instead now applying to those with mental health issues. I have experienced all of these firsthand, and I’m sure many of you have too.

  1. You’re faking it.
  2. Back in my day we didn’t have *insert diagnosis here*!
  3. If you just felt the healing power of Jesus Christ, you would be fine!
  4. You’re crazy.
  5. You’re scary/dangerous.
  6. Your parents didn’t raise you right. They probably coddled you.
  7. You should turn to the Bible/God for support.
  8. Try going to church!
  9. Mental health medicine is a scam.
  10. You belong in an asylum.
  11. Are you a criminal?
  12. Do you do drugs?
  13. Are you hallucinating right now?
  14. Tell me what you’re hallucinating.
  15. Get over it.
  16. Just relax!
